History, BA (with concentrations in General History, Social Studies Secondary Education, Pre-Law, and Public History)

The Bachelor of Arts in History emphasizes 21st-Century skill development in critical thinking, analytical research, and effective presentation. Students will choose from concentrations in General History, Public History (internships), Social Studies Education, and Pre-Law in pursuit of their postgraduate career or education goals. The Bachelor of Arts in History emphasizes the role of Minors and interdisciplinary learning in tailoring each student’s desired skill set to their individual postgraduate goals. Students will also be encouraged with opportunities to learn experiential skills in internships at local museums (such as the Southern Forest Heritage Museum) and other institutions connected to public history. Graduates will be well-prepared for a variety of graduate programs in history, law school, and social sciences; careers in secondary education and public history; and many different employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. 

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of the main themes of history as identified by the full-time history faculty.

  2. Graduates will demonstrate a working knowledge of the tools of information technology (the “tools” include but are not limited to internet, digital and print materials including scholarly journals, primary resources, etc.).

  3. Graduates will demonstrate competence in research methodologies, including the ability to organize and present the results of historical research (this may include written as well as oral components).

  4. Graduates will demonstrate critical thinking skills appropriate to the study of history.

Admission Requirements

Students must meet all requirements for admission to the university. The Bachelor of Arts in History has no separate or special admission requirements.

Degree Requirements

  1. Students must complete all of the requirements pertaining to baccalaureate degrees as specified in Degree Requirements .

  2. Students must complete at least 45 semester hours at the 3000-level or above and at least 15 semester hours at the 4000-level.

  3. Students are required to make a grade of “C” or higher in each course listed under Major Requirements and Concentration requirements.

  4. History courses for which students earn a grade of “D” may be counted as free electives.

Note: number of free electives varies depending on student’s declared concentration. Students in General History and Public History require 36 free electives; students in Pre-Law require 33; and students in Social Studies Secondary Education require six. Students required to take 33 to 36 free electives may use the Elective category to declare one or two minors or a second major.
